45 分鐘怎樣分配 How to budget the 45 minutes
英文運用卷失分最多的原因不是英文不好,而是時間用錯地方。四個部分題數相若,但所需時間差很遠。
Most marks lost in this paper are lost to clock management, not to English. The four sections carry similar question counts but demand very different amounts of time.
- 閱讀理解放最後做。文章長,一旦陷進去很容易用掉 20 分鐘,而它的分數與其他部分相同。 Do Comprehension last. The passages are long and can swallow 20 minutes, yet each question is worth exactly the same as a 15-second grammar question.
- 錯誤辨正最快,目標 6–8 分鐘完成 10 題。多數錯誤屬於少數幾條規則(見下方陷阱),認出來就是幾秒鐘的事。 Error Identification is the fastest section — aim for 6–8 minutes. Most errors come from a small set of rules (see the traps below); once you recognise the pattern it takes seconds.
- 句子填充先讀完整句,再看選項。先看選項會令你被似是而非的答案牽著走。 In Sentence Completion, read the whole sentence before looking at the options. Reading the options first lets a plausible-sounding wrong answer anchor you.
- 段落改寫每題約 60 秒。選項通常只有一個沒有新增文法錯誤——先用排除法。 Budget about 60 seconds per Paragraph Improvement question. Usually only one option introduces no new grammatical error — eliminate rather than evaluate.
- 留 3 分鐘填答案紙。答題紙由機器閱讀,沒填的題目一定是零分,而答錯不扣分。 Reserve the last 3 minutes to transfer answers. The sheet is machine-read, a blank always scores zero, and wrong answers cost nothing.
四個最常見的失分陷阱 Four traps that cost the most marks
以下四類錯誤在錯誤辨正與段落改寫中反覆出現。認得出來,這兩部分的分數會明顯提升。
These four patterns recur constantly in Error Identification and Paragraph Improvement. Learning to spot them lifts your score in both sections.
the number of _ a number of 'The number of' vs 'a number of'
✗ The number of applications are significantly higher than last year's. The number of applications are significantly higher than last year's.
✓ The number of applications is significantly higher than last year's. The number of applications is significantly higher than last year's.
「The number of」的主語是 number,屬單數,動詞用 is;「A number of」等於 many,屬複數,動詞才用 are。考卷幾乎每次都會考這一組。 In 'the number of', the subject is *number* — singular, so the verb is *is*. 'A number of' means *many* and takes a plural verb. This pair appears in almost every paper.
逗號連接兩個完整句(comma splice) Comma splice
✗ The authorities wanted to turn the market into a public space, this was their stated aim. The authorities wanted to turn the market into a public space, this was their stated aim.
✓ The authorities' intention was to convert the market into a public space. The authorities' intention was to convert the market into a public space.
兩個可獨立成句的子句不能只用逗號連接。段落改寫最常見的正確答案,就是把兩句合併或改用分號、連接詞。留意:改寫後若出現分詞懸垂(dangling modifier),同樣是錯。 Two independent clauses cannot be joined by a comma alone. The correct revision usually merges them or uses a semicolon or conjunction. Watch out — a revision that fixes the splice but creates a dangling modifier is still wrong.
比較對象不對等 Faulty comparison
✗ The salary of a clerical officer is higher than an assistant. The salary of a clerical officer is higher than an assistant.
✓ The salary of a clerical officer is higher than that of an assistant. The salary of a clerical officer is higher than that of an assistant.
原句把「薪金」和「助理」相比。必須用 that of/those of 或所有格(last year's)令兩邊對等。這也是為何 than last year's 是正確的——它等於 than last year's number。 The original compares a *salary* with a *person*. Use 'that of' / 'those of' or a possessive to make both sides comparable. This is also why 'than last year's' is correct — it stands for 'than last year's number'.
主旨題選了「正確但非主旨」的選項 True but not the main point
✗ 選了一個文章確實有提到、但只佔一兩段的內容作為「主旨」。 Choosing an option the passage genuinely states, but which occupies only a paragraph or two.
✓ 選能涵蓋全文結構的選項——例如文章同時列出優點與批評,主旨就是「衡量兩面」,而不是任何一面。 Choose the option that accounts for the whole structure — if the passage sets out both merits and criticisms, the purpose is to weigh both, not to argue either.
主旨題的錯誤選項幾乎全部都是「文中屬實」的句子,所以逐句核對是無效的。要問的是:這個選項能否解釋文章為何這樣編排? Wrong options in main-purpose questions are almost always factually supported by the passage, so checking them sentence by sentence does not discriminate. Ask instead: does this option explain why the passage is arranged the way it is?
三條題目的完整思路 Three questions, reasoned through
以下示範不是背答案,而是示範在考場上應該怎樣想。
These are not answers to memorise — they show the reasoning to run under time pressure.
錯誤辨正 Error Identification
(A) The number of / (B) applications received / (C) are / (D) last year's / (E) No error (A) The number of / (B) applications received / (C) are / (D) last year's / (E) No error
- 先找主語,不要被中間的名詞影響。主語是 The number,不是 applications。 Find the subject first and ignore the intervening noun. The subject is *The number*, not *applications*.
- The number 是單數,所以 (C) are 應為 is。 *The number* is singular, so (C) *are* should be *is*.
- (D) last year's 看似可疑,但它是 last year's number 的省略,比較對象對等,並無錯誤。 (D) *last year's* looks suspicious but is an ellipsis of *last year's number* — the comparison is balanced and correct.
答案:(C) Answer: (C)
句子填充 Sentence Completion
What made the reform remarkable was not its boldness but ___, for it changed almost everything while alarming almost no one. What made the reform remarkable was not its boldness but ___, for it changed almost everything while alarming almost no one.
- 先鎖定結構:not X but Y,代表答案必須與 boldness 相對。 Lock onto the structure first: *not X but Y* means the answer must contrast with *boldness*.
- 再看 for 之後的解釋:改變了一切,卻沒有驚動任何人——這是「安靜而有效」。 Then read the clause after *for*: it changed everything while alarming no one — that is quiet effectiveness.
- 「引起憤怒」「造成爭議」「耗費龐大」都與「沒有驚動任何人」矛盾,全部排除。 Options about fury, controversy or expense all contradict 'alarming almost no one' — eliminate them all.
答案:the quietness with which it was achieved Answer: 'the quietness with which it was achieved'
閱讀理解(主旨題) Comprehension (main purpose)
文章描述中環行人天橋網絡,第 4、7 段列出好處,第 5、6 段列出批評,結尾指兩種評價都有道理。問:文章的主要目的是甚麼? A passage on Central's footbridge network sets out advantages in paragraphs 4 and 7, objections in paragraphs 5 and 6, and concludes that both assessments hold some truth. What is the passage's main purpose?
- 先看結構而非內容:正面兩段、負面兩段、結尾不偏袒。 Look at the structure before the content: two positive paragraphs, two negative, a conclusion favouring neither.
- 「主張行人應回到地面」是文中某些批評者的立場,不是作者的立場——這是典型的「正確但非主旨」陷阱。 'Pedestrians should return to street level' is a position held by critics in the passage, not by the author — the classic true-but-not-the-point trap.
- 「追溯工程方法」只對應一小段,涵蓋不了全文。 'Trace the engineering methods' covers only a fraction of the passage.
答案:衡量行人天橋網絡的優點與批評 Answer: to present and weigh both the merits and the criticisms

Paragraph Improvement
Which of the following is the best revision of sentence (1)?
- A. Leaves and grass cuttings, they were previously sent to landfill with the ordinary rubbish.
- B. Leaves and grass cuttings were previously sent to landfill with the ordinary rubbish.
- C. Leaves and grass cuttings was previously sending to landfill with the ordinary rubbish.
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: B — Leaves and grass cuttings were previously sent to landfill with the ordinary rubbish.
詳解 Explanation: 原句含有主謂一致錯誤:複數主語「Leaves and grass cuttings」須配複數動詞「were」,而非單數「was」。選項B以「were sent」改正此錯誤。選項A雖使用「were」,但在完整名詞主語後加入多餘的代名詞「they」,構成雙重主語,不合語法。選項C保留單數「was」並改為進行式「sending」,同時有主謂一致錯誤和時態錯誤。選項D接受原句的主謂一致錯誤。
Paragraph Improvement
Which of the following is the best revision of sentence (2)?
- A. Clear labels were added, and a short guide was delivered to every flat.
- B. Clear labels were added, and a short guide was being deliver to every flat.
- C. Clear labels were added, and a short guide delivered to every flat.
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: A — Clear labels were added, and a short guide was delivered to every flat.
詳解 Explanation: 原句含有動詞形式錯誤:被動語態須以助動詞「was」配過去分詞「delivered」,而非原形動詞「deliver」。選項A改為「was delivered」,保持兩個並列子句的平行被動語態結構。選項B加入進行式助動詞「being」並保留原形「deliver」,既延續錯誤,又產生不合適的進行式被動語態,且缺少過去分詞形式。選項C刪去助動詞「was」,令「a short guide delivered to every flat」缺少有限謂語,與第一子句的被動結構不對稱。選項D接受原句的動詞形式錯誤。
Paragraph Improvement
Which is the best version of the underlined portion of sentence (3): 'Because the compost was offered free to residents many took bags for their own plants'?
- A. The compost was offered free to residents, because many took bags for their own plants
- B. Because the compost was offered free to residents, many took bags for their own plants
- C. Because the compost was offered free to residents, many taking bags for their own plants
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: B — Because the compost was offered free to residents, many took bags for their own plants
詳解 Explanation: 引導性從屬子句後須加逗號,將其與主句分隔。從句在「residents」處結束,主句「many took bags for their own plants」前須有逗號。選項 B 補上逗號,同時保留有限定式動詞「took」。選項 A 顛倒因果邏輯,將結果(「many took bags」)置於主句,將原因(「the compost was offered free」)置於「because」子句,與文章語意相違,且從屬關係完全倒置。選項 C 在正確位置插入逗號,但以現在分詞「taking」取代有限定式動詞「took」,使句子缺乏謂語。選項 D 保留原句,未加必要的逗號,故不正確。
Paragraph Improvement
Which of the following is the best revision of sentence (4)?
- A. The scheme reducing waste and beautified the estate at the same time.
- B. The scheme reduce waste and beautify the estate at the same time.
- C. The scheme reduced waste and beautified the estate at the same time.
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: C — The scheme reduced waste and beautified the estate at the same time.
詳解 Explanation: 原句含有時態不一致錯誤:「reduce」為現在式或原形,而「beautified」為簡單過去式。在描述計劃成效的過去敘事語境中,兩個動詞均須使用簡單過去式。選項C補上「reduced」,使兩個動詞平行地採用簡單過去式。選項A將「reduce」改為現在分詞「reducing」,令「The scheme reducing waste」成為缺乏有限謂語的片語。選項B保留「reduce」的錯誤時態,並將「beautified」改回「beautify」,使兩個動詞均為原形,無法表達過去的敘事意義。選項D接受原句的時態不一致錯誤。
Paragraph Improvement
Which is the best version of the final sentence (5) to conclude the passage?
- A. A simple idea had turned a problem into something more useful than ever imagined.
- B. A simple idea had turned a problem into something useful.
- C. A simple idea had turned a problem into something that was usefully done.
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: B — A simple idea had turned a problem into something useful.
詳解 Explanation: 原句含有詞類錯誤:「usefully」是副詞,但此處須以形容詞作「something」的表語補語,正確形式為形容詞「useful」。選項B作出此更正,使句子簡潔,適合作結語。選項A引入「more useful than ever imagined」等比較短語,加入原文未支持的內容,改變了句意。選項C將副詞「usefully」移至另一位置(「that was usefully done」),仍以副詞修飾動作而非描述「something」的性質,錯誤依然存在。選項D接受原句的副詞代形容詞錯誤。

- B. Members could now to scan and to renew books using their own phones.
- C. Members could now scan books and to renew them using their own phones.
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: A — Members could now scan and renew books using their own phones.
詳解 Explanation: 原句含有不平行結構錯誤:「scan」(不帶「to」的不定詞)與「to renew」(帶「to」的不定詞)以「and」連接,但在情態動詞「could」之後,兩個動詞均須使用不帶「to」的原形動詞。選項A將兩個動詞統一為「scan and renew」,不帶「to」,更正此錯誤。選項B在「scan」前亦加上「to」,在情態動詞後使用完整不定詞,語法錯誤加劇。選項C將受詞「books」從「scan」中分離,並保留「to renew」的完整不定詞形式,不平行問題依然存在。選項D接受原句的不平行結構錯誤。

答案 Answer: C — The app, rushed out before it was ready, crashed under the early demand
詳解 Explanation: 分詞短語「rushed out before it was ready」是非限制性修飾語,須以逗號標示於兩側。

Which is the best version of the underlined portion of sentence (3): 'After the problems were fixed the app became genuinely popular'?
- A. After the problems were fixed, the app became genuinely popular
- B. After the problems were fixed the app becoming genuinely popular
- C. The app became genuinely popular, after the problems were fixed before
- D. No change; the sentence is best as it is.
答案 Answer: A — After the problems were fixed, the app became genuinely popular
詳解 Explanation: 引導性副詞子句「After the problems were fixed」後須加逗號以分隔主句。選項A補上該逗號並保留主句的有限動詞「became」。選項B省去逗號,並將有限動詞「became」改為現在分詞「becoming」,令句子缺少謂語動詞。選項C將副詞子句移至句末,本身在語法上可行,但加入多餘且自相矛盾的「before」(「after … before」邏輯不通),扭曲句意。選項D接受原句的逗號缺失錯誤。

常見問題 Frequently asked questions
CRE 英文運用有幾多題?考幾耐? How many questions is the CRE Use of English paper, and how long is it?
40 題,45 分鐘,全部為多項選擇題,平均每題約 67 秒。
Forty multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes — about 67 seconds per question.
答錯會扣分嗎? Is there negative marking?
不會。答錯與留空同樣是零分,所以任何題目都應該作答,不確定也要猜。
No. A wrong answer scores the same as a blank, so you should answer every question — guess if you must.
英文運用二級 (Level 2) 難唔難考? How hard is Level 2 in Use of English?
二級是較高等級,大部分學位及專業程度職系都要求二級。及格線並非固定百分比,但穩定達到二級通常需要在錯誤辨正與句子填充失分極少,並在閱讀理解保持穩定。
Level 2 is the higher grade and is required by most degree and professional grade posts. The threshold is not a fixed percentage, but candidates who reach Level 2 consistently tend to lose very few marks in Error Identification and Sentence Completion.
成績有效期多久?可以重考嗎? How long are results valid, and can I retake?
2006 年 12 月起取得的及格成績永久有效。可以只報考其中一張試卷,亦可重考以爭取更高等級。
Passes obtained from December 2006 onward never expire. You may sit a single paper on its own, and you may retake a paper to improve your grade.
英文運用可唔可以帶字典或計算機? Can I bring a dictionary or calculator to Use of English?
不可以。字典與電子產品一律不准帶入試場;計算機只限能力傾向測試使用。
No. Dictionaries and electronic devices are not permitted. Calculators are allowed in the Aptitude Test only.
應該先做閱讀理解定最後做? Should I do Comprehension first or last?
建議最後做。閱讀理解每題分數與其他部分相同,但耗時最長,先做容易令後面較快的題目沒有時間完成。
Last, in most cases. Comprehension questions are worth the same as every other question but take the longest, so doing them first risks leaving faster marks unclaimed.
